When Is the Best Time to See Bioluminescence in Florida?

At A Day Away Kayak Tours, your safety is never an afterthought — it’s our foundation. Every tour is led by guides trained in on-water kayak rescues, and we never operate in unsafe weather or water conditions.

Our team goes beyond the basics. All of our guides receive First Aid and CPR certification, and our senior team members are trained Florida Master Naturalists, bringing both knowledge and preparedness to every paddle.

Is the New Moon the Best Time for a Bioluminescent Kayak Tour?

Yes — the days surrounding the new moon are generally considered the best time to experience bioluminescence kayaking in Florida. With little or no moonlight in the sky, the glowing water becomes much more vivid and easier to see. For the brightest viewing conditions, we recommend booking your kayak tour within about a week of the new moon or on nights when the moon rises later in the evening. These dates are extremely popular for bioluminescent kayak tours, especially during peak summer months, so reserving early is highly recommended.

Can You Still See Bioluminescence During a Full Moon?

Absolutely. While darker nights offer the strongest visibility, bioluminescence can still be seen during full moon periods, especially during the peak summer glow season. Our experienced guides know where to paddle to maximize visibility, including sheltered areas where mangroves and trees help block excess moonlight. On some nights, cloud cover can also create darker conditions that improve the viewing experience even during brighter moon phases. Plus, full moon kayaking on the Indian River Lagoon creates a unique and beautiful atmosphere all on its own.
